North Idaho area offers accredited high schools, middle schools, alternative high/middle schools, and elementary schools. Also offered are Charter schools, private schools, online charter schools, and homeschooling co-ops. In addition to numerous honors and advanced placement courses, high school students who qualify may enter a dual enrollment program with North Idaho College or take advanced, technical, and specialized courses at Kootenai Technical Education Campus (KTEC), a professional technical academy for high school students. Local schools enjoy strong support of the business community and governmental agencies.
North Idaho College (NIC) is a comprehensive community college offering small class sizes and a wide array of academic, professional technical and workforce training programs. The beautiful 44-acre main campus is located on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene and the Spokane River, making it a perfect setting for its excellent outdoor recreation program. The college is also well known for its award-winning entrepreneurial programs, excellent nursing program and nationally acclaimed student newspaper.
Residence Hall is home to 200 on campus residents and the Student Union is the center of numerous student activities. Another NIC gem is a recently completed state-of-the-art facility in Rathdrum, the NIC Parker Technical Education Center. Credits earned for an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree are transferable to any Idaho public college or university as an accredited college, and NIC credits transfer to most institutions across the country. Lewis-Clark State College: Coeur d’Alene offers baccalaureate degrees in Business, Administration, Communication Arts, General Studies, Justice Studies, Nursing (BSN), and Social Work (BSW). Courses offer day or evening and weekend classes to meet the needs of working students. Eligible students earn college credit for work, military, and vocation/technical experience, which may apply to certain degrees.
University of Idaho Coeur d’Alene was established in 1981 to provide continued growth and a wide range of quality education opportunities for Coeur d’Alene residents. Programs include degrees in elementary education, K-12 physical education, K-12 special education, and environmental science. Graduate degrees include education, education administration, counseling and human services, vocational teacher, adult education, and two specialist degrees.
The University of Idaho Coeur d’Alene, in collaboration with other education institutions and community groups, has assumed an active role in education. Research projects provide the most current technological advances for public school teachers and students. The Northern Idaho Center for Higher Education (NICHE) is a coalition of UI, North Idaho College, Lewis-Clark State College, and Idaho State University to combine services for expanded educational opportunities. The directors of UI CDA, Washington State University Spokane, and Gonzaga University are collaborating to combine programs assisting the communities of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.
